Course Overview
Hi, everyone, and welcome to this course: "PRINCE2, The Business Case Theme. " My name is Tommy van Schaik and I am currently employed as a project manager for the Dutch government, who themselves were an early adopter of the PRINCE2 project management method. PRINCE2 is a practical, project-based approach to project management, helping you with your projects in either a management role, but also as a member of a project team. In this course, we will present you with a deep dive into the PRINCE2 Business Case Theme. This theme is one of the seven best practice knowledge areas within the PRINCE2 method. First, we will discuss PRINCE2's approach to business cases and how the business case theme fits in with the other PRINCE2 concepts. Then we will discuss how to develop a solid business case, but also how to make sure that the business case is kept up-to-date during the project and that it is verified by the right people in the project organization. Finally, we will explain how PRINCE2 uses the business case document and the benefits review plan to measure the benefits that your project is producing for the organization. After this course, you will have learned how to successfully use the concept of a business case in your own project. And on top of that, you will definitely have the knowledge to continue this PRINCE2 Practitioner learning path. Now this course is the second course in the PRINCE2 Practitioner learning path, put together to get you up to PRINCE2 Practitioner level and getting you ready for both your Foundation and Practitioner exams. Developing a Business Case
Hi, everybody, and welcome back. This module will be all about the first step in having a good Business Case and maintaining that important continued business justification. In this module, we will take a deep dive into the development of a Business Case. Developing a Business Case is where you learn how to create a Business Case and like we learned in the previous module, a Business Case is vital to any project. It is the justification for the time and resources your project is receiving from the organization. In this module, we will take a look at the way Prince2 approaches the development of a Business Case in the early stages of a project. So in this module, we will first cover how developing a Business Case fits in with the other steps in Prince2's approach to Business Cases. Next, we will discuss the difference between an Outline and a Detailed Business Case, especially in what parts of the Prince2 process both documents are created. Important also is the content captured in a Business Case and why it's so vital to have all the different topic Prince2 prescribed for a Business Case actually present in that document. And finally, we'll discuss the roles and responsibilities. What are the different roles in a Prince2 project organization responsible for when it comes to developing a Business Case? A Business Case is an important document and it's the foundation of a successful project. So, whenever you're ready, let's go ahead and look at the way Prince2 approaches the development of a Business Case.

Example Business Case
Hi everybody, and welcome back to the course Prince2: The Business Case Theme. In this module, we will provide you with an example Business Case. Because the Business Case is such an important document, it is important that you get a good look and feel for the different topics within a Business Case. Getting the Business Case right will not only help you with managing your projects, but it will also help you to pitch your project to your management because at the heart of every good management pitch is a solid Business Case. Now, Prince2 does not describe exactly how to write a Business Case and what methods you should use to get the information needed for a Business Case. It just tells you what topics should be addressed in your Business Case based on the best practices gathered over the years. Once again, Prince2 is a method. It tells you what to do. You are free to choose your own format, methods, and level of detail. Now, we split this module up into two pieces. We'll start off with the fictional scenario we will be using for the Business Case. This will be a made up scenario, but it is based on a real-life project. We just took out a lot of the detail, rounded up some numbers, and changed the names to keep things as simple as possible, but still realistic enough to be used as an example scenario. Next, we'll step into the example Business Case, discussing all the topics that should be covered in a Business Case in order for it to be useful in a Prince2 project. All right, without further ado, let's go ahead with the example Business Case.

Verifying and Maintaining a Business Case
Hi there, and welcome back. Now that you have learned about the process of creating a business case and the content of the business case, it's time to talk about verifying and maintaining a business case. Because the environment of a project is constantly moving, it's not enough just to create a good business case, but it is also imperative that the business case be kept up to date, and that it is verified whenever it changes. And up to date and verified business case make sure that the project does not only start of with a good business justification, but it maintains a business sanity as the project progresses. This is an aspect vital to grasp. Because failing to see when a project is no longer worthwhile is one of the major reasons for overtime and over budget projects we refer to as a runaway projects. Alright. So in this module, we're first going to explain what verifying and maintaining a business case means, and how it connects with the rest of business case team. Then we're going to show how a company could suffer from a project that is carried out and managed successfully, but does not have a verified business case. After that, we're going to look at what point in the PRINCE2 process, a business case is verified, and at which point the business case is usually updated. Finally, we're going to look at the roles and responsibilities regarding the verification and the maintenance of a business case. Alright, now let's go ahead and see why it's so important to verify and maintain that business case.

Confirming the Benefits
Hi there and welcome to the last module of this course, PRINCE2 The Business Case Theme. This module will explain everything you will need to know about confirming the benefits of a project on your way to becoming a PRINCE2 practitioner. Confirming the benefits is an important topic and sometimes an overlooked aspect of project management. It is there to measure whether the project's benefits were actually realized during or after the project. The benefits were the reason a project was started. So it seems only natural that the organization will want to know if the benefits are actually realized. It is often forgotten to put a system in place that the benefits can also be measured long after the project is done. PRINCE2 counters this problem by the last step in the business case theme: confirming the benefits. Here you will learn about this last step and the associated benefits review plan that aids the project by describing how the benefits should be measured. So in this module we will first explain the concepts of the last step in the PRINCE2's approach to the business case: confirming the benefits. Next, we will look at the PRINCE2 process and pinpoint the times and the roles and responsibilities associated with confirming the benefits. And finally, we will take a look at the key document in confirming the benefits: the benefits review plan. You will use the benefits review plan to describe how the benefits of a project will be measured, and not just during the project, but also when the project is already finished.
